Tokyo Olympic 2020. Why not 2021?

Are you wondering why the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games is not called Tokyo 2021? If you look at your calendar, it states that the year we are currently in is 2021, not 2020. Then why is the official name of this year’s Tokyo summer Olympic games aren’t renamed? We assume that a lot of readers are wondering why it is still called Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. We will dive deep and explained why the official name hasn’t been renamed.

In order to find out why we will have to go back to last year when the coronavirus pandemic just started. In March 2020 Governor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government stated that the official name of the Olympic games will stay the same even if the event postponed. She was interviewed by reporters and made it official, after a telephone conference between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.

In a telephone conference, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed with IOC President Thomas Bach, that the Tokyo summer Olympic Games will be held as late as the summer of the year 2021. The Phrase “Tokyo 2020” is already used in the official event emblem along with T-shirts, sports towels andKeyholders. The official’s uniforms and multiple athlete’s sportswear also use the design that included the phrase “Tokyo 2020”.

When walking the streets of Japan, you will see numerous advertisement banners hanging from light stands, or from the building walls. The government has already spent a considerable amount of money to spread awareness of the event as “Tokyo 2020”. If the government tried to rebrand the event to “Tokyo 2021”, it will mean that they will have to spend a lot more brand awareness. The already 1 year delayed Olympic Games will cost extra financially and seems impossible for the government to rebrand the event.
